Minerals in dermatological applications

Various minerals are used in dermatology for treating different skin disorders:

Aluminium Hydroxide Acetate and Aluminium Aceto-Tartrate

These two aluminium salts acting antibacterial are often a component in drops for treating oedema and inflammation in the ear.

Aluminum Lactate

Aluminum Lactate can be used in lotions for treating acne or also in compounds for the use against different oral ailments, e.g. gumbleeding.

Ammonium Lactate

Scaly dry dermatosis, as for example Ichtyosis vulgaris, can be treated with moisturizing compounds containing ammonium lactate.

Calamine

The mixture referred to as calamine containing Zinc Oxide and Ferric (III) Oxide can be used in topical compounds as an adstringent and as an antipruritic as for example in easing itching in chicken pox, bug bites or different eczema. Possible preparations are creams, lotions, powders or ointments.

Calcium Gluconate

Hydrofluoric acid burns are often treated with gel containing calcium gluconate.

Copper- and Manganese Gluconate

These two mineral salts can be found in preparations for treating fissures which occur during or after breastfeeding.
Lithium gluconate.

Lithium Gluconate

An 8 % lithium gluconate ointment is often used in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis.
