Lithium salts in medicinal psychotherapy

depressive frau am meerIn 1949 the Australian psychiatrist John Cade discovered in a rather accidental way the psychotropic effect of lithium salts in animal experiments.  Lithium has been used to treat depression and mania since the middle of the 20th century.

Lithium salts are known to be well studied, rarely show any serious side effects and to be well-tolerated. They do not lead to an addiction and have according to studies a suicide prevention effect.

Lithium has a very narrow window of effectiveness, so that the lithium concentration in patients´ blood has to be monitored regularly during treatment.

Warning: Never undertake self-treatment.

The International Consensus Group on Bipolar I Depression recommends lithium for the main treatment of bipolar disorder I.

Dr. Paul Lohmann® offers lithium in different pharmaceutical qualities in form of the following salts:

  • Lithium Carbonate
  • Lithium Citrate
  • Lithium Gluconate
  • Lithium Sulfate

The treatment of mania and depression with lithium is frequently described in modern music, cinema and literature, for example in the novel which was made into film "One Flew Over The Cuckoo´s Nest " or in the song "Lithium" by "Nirvana".
