Mineral salts in urological applications
Phosphate binders for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia
Hyperphosphatemia is a disturbance in which there is an abnormally
elevated level of phosphate in the blood. This can be caused by
- Increased phosphate intake
- Increased phosphate release via body´s own tissue
- Lowered phosphate precipitation in renal failure
- Increased phosphate reabsorption by the kidneys.
If the phosphate level rises in serum this may lead on one hand to the concretion of calcium phosphate in blood and tissue and on the other hand, through binding phosphate with calcium, this could decrease dramatically the calcium level in serum causing a hypercalcaemia.
While an acute hyperphosphatemia requires an immediate and special treatment, a chronic hyperphosphatemia can be treated with phosphate binders.
In most treatments the following minerals are used:
- Calcium Acetate
- Calcium Carbonate
- Calcium Citrate
- Aluminium Hydroxide
- Aluminium Carbonate
